Slicing by hand means guessing cell sizes, counting margins and fixing off-by-one cuts. The slicer reads the sheet first: it finds an even grid whose cut lines cross no sprite pixels, or detects every separate sprite by its connected pixels when the sheet has no grid. You see the cuts on top of the sheet, the animation plays as you adjust, and you can click any cell to drop it.

How to use the Sprite Sheet Slicer

  1. Drop a sheet with a transparent or flat-colour background. The grid is detected immediately and drawn over it.
  2. If the guess is wrong, set rows and columns, or switch to Cell size and enter the frame size. Use offset and gap for sheets with a border or spacing between frames.
  3. For packed sheets without a grid (item sets, tilesets of props), choose Find sprites. Merge distance joins detached bits such as a sword tip to their sprite.
  4. Click cells on the sheet to exclude them. Empty cells are skipped automatically.
  5. Watch the preview, set the FPS, then download frames as a ZIP, a GIF, or a rebuilt sheet with Godot, Unity, Phaser or Aseprite data.

What you get

  • Frames ZIP: every frame as its own PNG (the cell in grid modes, a tight box in Find sprites mode), plus a JSON listing where each sat on the original sheet.
  • Uniform frames: all frames in equal cells, bottom-centre aligned, ready to animate.
  • Rebuilt sheet with clean spacing, plus Aseprite, Phaser/TexturePacker, Godot 4 and CSS data, and a GIF.

Which engines it fits

  • Bottom-centre alignment keeps the feet on the same line in every frame, which is what platformer and top-down characters need.
  • The rebuilt sheet's data files load directly in Godot 4 (SpriteFrames), Phaser 3 (atlas) and Aseprite-based importers for Unity and Godot.

Tips from making games with it

  • Sheets from asset stores often have a 1px gap between frames. Set Gap X/Y to 1 if the cut lines sit off by one.
  • If Find sprites splits a character into pieces, raise Merge distance until each character is one box.
  • If it merges two neighbouring sprites, lower Merge distance to 0.
  • Sheets with an opaque backdrop: turn on Remove background colour so frames come out transparent.

Use cases

  • Pulling single frames from an asset-store sheet to edit one pose.
  • Splitting an icon or item sheet into individual PNGs for a UI or inventory.
  • Re-spacing a sheet so it works with an engine's grid slicer.
  • Turning a sheet into a GIF to share progress.

FAQ

How does automatic grid detection work?
It tries every column and row count that divides the sheet evenly, rejects any grid whose cut lines go through sprite pixels or split a sprite in two, and requires most cells to contain something. The finest grid that passes wins. If no even grid fits, as with an atlas or a UI kit, it switches to Find sprites.
What if my sprites are not in a grid?
Use Find sprites. It labels every group of connected pixels, merges groups that are within the merge distance, drops specks smaller than the minimum size, and orders the results in reading order (rows top to bottom, left to right).
Can it slice sheets with a solid background?
Yes. The background colour is detected from the border and treated as empty for detection. Turn on Remove background colour to make the exported frames transparent.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Slicing, detection and encoding all run in your browser. The sheet never leaves your device.
What file names do the frames get?
The sheet's name plus a zero-padded index, for example hero_00.png, hero_01.png, so they sort correctly everywhere.
Can I put the frames back together differently?
Yes, the export panel rebuilds a sheet with your choice of columns and padding, or use the Sprite Sheet Maker for tight packing, extrusion and power-of-two sizes.
